Microsoft Cripples Hacker Spam Network.

Microsoft announced that through legal action and technical cooperation with industry partners, they have executed a major botnet takedown of Waledac, a large and well-known "spambot."

Botnets -networks of compromised computers controlled by hackers known as "bot-herders" - have become a serious problem in cyberspace. Their proliferation has led some to worry that the botnet problem is unsolvable. Under the control of a hacker or group of hackers, botnets are often used to conduct various attacks ranging from denial of service attacks on websites, to spamming, click fraud, and distribution of new forms of malicious software.

As a founding member of the Botnet Task Force - a government in the fight against bots- Microsoft is getting even more creative and aggressive in the fight against botnets and all forms of cybercrime.

Microsoft said it got clearance from a US judge to virtually sever the cyber criminals' command computers from hundreds of thousands of machines worldwide infected with a Waledac virus.

The takedown of the Waledac botnet that Microsoft executed this week - known internally as "Operation b49" - was the result of months of investigation and the application of a legal strategy, Microsoft said.

One of the 10 largest botnets in the US and a major distributor of spam globally, Waledac is estimated to have infected hundreds of thousands of computers around the world and, prior to this action, was believed to have the capacity to send over 1.5 billion spam emails per day. In a recent analysis, Microsoft found that between December 3-21, 2009, approximately 651 million spam emails attributable to Waledac were directed to Hotmail accounts alone, including offers and scams related to online pharmacies, imitation goods, jobs, penny stocks and more.

On February 22, in response to a complaint filed by Microsoft in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Virginia, a federal judge granted a temporary restraining order cutting off 277 Internet domains believed to be run by criminals as the Waledac bot.

Three days into the effort, Operation b49 has effectively shut down connections to the vast majority of Waledac-infected computers, Microsoft said. "But the operation hasn't cleaned the infected computers and is not a silver bullet for undoing all the damage we believe Waledac has caused. Although the zombies are now largely out of the bot-herders? control, they are still infected with the original malware," said Tim Cranton, Microsoft Associate General Counsel.

This action has effectively cut off traffic to Waledac at the ".com" or domain registry level, severing the connection between the command and control centers of the botnet and most of its thousands of zombie computers around the world. Microsoft said that it had since been taking additional technical countermeasures to downgrade much of the remaining peer-to-peer command and control communication within the botnet. The company added that it would continue to work with the security community to mitigate and respond to this botnet.

Cranton advised users to follow the "protect your PC" guidance available at
http://www.microsoft.com/protect, in order to make sure they are not infected by this or other botnets.

"This legal and industry operation against Waledac is the first of its kind, but it won't be the last," Cranton added. "With this action, done in cooperation with experts from Shadowserver, the University of Washington, Symantec, University of Mannheim, Technical University in Vienna, International Secure Systems Lab, the University of Bonn and others, we're building on other important work across the global security community to combat botnets," he said.

MSI Launches New R5870 Lightning Graphics Card with 15-phase Power Design

MSI has officially launched a new generation of the Lightning series, the R5870 Lightning.

The card features exclusive all Hi-c CAP for GPU power, a 15-phase power design, two 8-pin external power connectors, special PCB design called LPL (Lightning Power Layer), Twin Frozr II Thermal design with 8mm SuperPipe technology.

The new MSI R5870 Lightning features the first 15-phase (13+2) power supply design; comparing to the reference-design 7 (5+2)-phase power supply module, it provides more than twice the power required by the GPU, MSI claims. It also features two 8-pin external power connectors, allowing more ample power supply for the R5870 Lightning; In addition, the design of the new R5870 Lightning has also incorporated a dedicated LPL (Lightning Power Layer) design, which is designed for GPU and memory power. This helps to increase the stability of power supply and also reduce noise.

Moreover, in order to enhance the quality of power supply of GPU, a next-generation capacitor - the Hi-c CAP has been all adopted. Compared with the solid-state capacitors currently used in high-end graphics cards, this new design has 8 times of lifespan, as well as being low-temperature and having better transmission efficiency and other technical characteristics. To provide better power quality,
MSI R5870 Lightning has also introduced the Proadlizer capacitors, which is not only able to accommodate very high current, but can also provide a more stable power supply.

In addition the Twin Frozr II Thermal Design is equipped with dual 8cm PWM fans and an 8mm SuperPipe technology for cooling efficiency. Heat can be distributed more quickly to the heat-sink, and removed by the dual fans.

Apart from the enhanced power supply structure, when the R5870 Lightning graphics card is configured with MSI's exclusive Afterburner overclocking software, not only can common GPU and memory clock adjustment functions be provided, but Over Voltage Function of GPU can be supported as well. Meanwhile, MSI R5870 Lightning graphics card also provides the function of V-Check Points. When a multi-meter is attached, the current voltage status of the GPU and memory can be easily obtained without modding any circuit hardware. This provides a very convenient monitoring design.

Yahoo In Content-sharing Partnership With Twitter

Yahoo today announced a global partnership with Twitter to integrate Twitter's real-time content with more than 600 million people in Yahoo!'s global network.

The integration is part of Yahoo!'s commitment to provide personally relevant information to people, from sources across the Web, in a battle to woo back Web surfers who are spending more time on social networking sites.

Yahoo! users will be able to access their personal Twitter feeds across Yahoo!'s products and properties, including the homepage, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Sports, and others, letting them check in more easily on what's happening with the people and things they care about while on Yahoo!.

People will be also able to update their Twitter status and share content from Yahoo! in their Twitter stream.

Yahoo! Search and Yahoo! media properties like News, Finance, Entertainment, and Sports will also include real-time public Twitter updates across a variety of topics. Yahoo! Search users will immediately see real-time Twitter results today.

Yahoo reached a similar agreement with Facebook in December, expanding the partnership to make it easier for users to share Facebook status updates and other information on Yahoo or share Yahoo sports scores or Flickr photos on Facebook.

As a result, anyone with a Yahoo! ID will be able to update multiple social networks simultaneously.

"Let me try to capture the enormity of this integration in 140 characters or less: We're turning the key to the online social universe -- you will find the most personally relevant experiences through Yahoo!," said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president, consumer products group, Yahoo!. "We're also simplifying people's lives by bringing their social worlds -- and the world --- together for easy access."

The Twitter integration also provides full access to the complete Twitter public data stream, which Yahoo! will use to improve the relevance and freshness of content across Yahoo! properties. This will drive deeper user engagement, and create new and opportunities for developers, advertisers, and publishers.

"The information in one single tweet can travel light-years farther with this Yahoo! integration," said Twitter cofounder, Biz Stone. "Tweets in more places brings relevance where and when you need it most."

The real-time Search integration is available immediately. Other parts of the integration are expected to launch later this year. Yahoo would not comment on any financial terms involved in the deal with Twitter.

Twitter is already having search deals with Microsoft, Google, AOL and MySpace. According to some media reports, Microsoft and Google paid a combined $25 million for the right to include Twitter data in their search results.

Blu-ray's Managed Copy Is Finally Coming Next March

The managed copy requirement will finally go into effect March 2010, and movie studios will be required to offer consumers a backup copy of every Blu-ray disc they buy.

Managed copy offers consumers the ability to make at least one full-resolution, protected copy of the Blu-ray content they own. The feature is currently a requirement of the new licenses content owners who have sign with the Advanced Access Content System
Licensing Administrator (AACS-LA), the industry consortium in charge of licensing AACS copy protection used on Blu-rays.

The managed copy requirement was initially required to go into effect Dec. 4, as part of the final licensing agreement for AACS, the copy protection used on Blu-ray discs. However, the live date has since been moved to March 31, 2010 by AACS-LA. From March 2010, studios will be required to offer consumers a backup copy of every Blu-ray disc they buy. However, no Blu-ray players in the market yet have the capability to make the backups. This means that PC drives will likely to be the first products to support managed copy.

A disc ready for managed copy will essentially include a link on it directing the Blu-ray player to an authentication server. Once a user chooses the option to make a copy, the Blu-ray player connects online to an authorization server. Discs are serialized, and the authentication server will determine if a copy is allowed.

The authentication servers will be hosted at AACS-LA while studios and third parties will be also able to run their own servers. However, no such servers are currently available and accessible.

Managed copies will be able to be burned to recordable Blu-ray or DVD discs, as a download to a Windows Media DRM-compatible portable player or hard drive, on a memory stick, SD card or as a bound copy, such as a digital copy file on the disc, though AACS-LA can approve other methods going forward.

Some studios are expected to offer the managed copy option with their Blu-ray disc movies for free, while some others will charge for it. BluScenes have already released "The Classic Fireplace," "Coral Reef Aquarium," and "Journey Through Space" BD titles that have become the first 3 Blu-ray releases to utilize the Blu-ray Managed Copy feature. The company is not applying any extra charge for the feature.

Currently consumers are getting a digital copy included of some BD titles they buy for free. This copy is available in an extra disc, while managed copy will allow consumers to create the backup movie on their own medium. Extra charging for the managed copy feature may not sound a good idea for consumers, who may consider the digital copy included as part of the bargain with many of their Blu-ray disc purchases.

Managed copy is also not working with Apple products since there?s been no AACS-LA submission from Apple, at least until now. However, some studios have worked with Apple to provide Digital Copy for iTunes, affording customers who purchase DVD and Blu-ray movies with an additional iTunes Digital Copy of the movie.

Just like movies purchased from the iTunes Store, an iTunes Digital Copy can be transferred to iTunes and then viewed on a PC or Mac, iPod with video, iPhone or on wide screen television with Apple TV.

Managed copy is expected to launch fully in the next few months, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association. The managed copy requirement goes into effect Dec. 4, as part of the final licensing agreement for AACS, the copy protection used on Blu-ray discs.

From December, studios will be required to offer consumers a backup copy of every Blu-ray disc they buy. However, no Blu-ray players in the market yet have the capability to make the backups. This means that PC drives will likely to be the first products to support managed copy.

A disc ready for managed copy will essentially include a link on it directing the Blu-ray player to an authentication server. Once a users chooses the option to make a copy, the Blu-ray player connects online to an authorization server. Discs are serialized, and the authentication server will determine if a copy is allowed.

Yahoo and Microsoft to Implement Search Alliance

Microsoft and Yahoo! announced today that they have received clearance for their search agreement, without restrictions, from both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission, and will now turn their attention to beginning the process of implementing the deal.

Implementation of the deal is expected to begin in the coming days and will involve transitioning Yahoo!'s algorithmic and paid search platforms to Microsoft, with Yahoo! becoming the exclusive relationship sales force for both companie's premium search advertisers globally.

"Once the transition is completed, the companie's unified search marketplace will deliver improved innovation for consumers, better volume and efficiency for advertisers and better monetization opportunities for web publishers through a platform that contains a larger pool of search queries," the companies said in a statement.

"This breakthrough search alliance means Yahoo! can focus even more on our own innovative search experience," said Yahoo! Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz. "Yahoo! gets to do what we do best: combine our science and technology with compelling content to build personally relevant online experiences for our users and customers."

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer concurred with Bartz's assessment. "Although we are just at the beginning of this process, we have reached an exciting milestone," Ballmer said. "I believe that together, Microsoft and Yahoo! will promote more choice, better value and greater innovation to our customers as well as to advertisers and publishers."

Under terms of the agreement, which was announced in late July 2009, Microsoft will provide Yahoo! with the same search result listings available through Bing, and Yahoo! will integrate Yahoo! content, enhanced listings with organized information about key topics, and tools to tailor the experience for Yahoo! users.

Microsoft is hoping that by making itself a single conduit for advertisers to access customers on both sites, it will become a credible alternative to Google.

ATI Catalyst Driver Updates Provide Many New Features

AMD announced several new ATI Catalyst graphics driver features today designed to enable higher performance, stability and an even more intuitive computing experience for ATI Radeon graphics users.

Two ATI Catalyst driver updates unlock the new features, the first coming today in ATI Catalyst update, version 10.2, and the second scheduled for release in March.

"As the first and, to date, only company to provide DirectX 11 technology and ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology, AMD continues to demonstrate our commitment to innovation in graphics," said Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice-president, Software, AMD.

Key features of ATI Catalyst graphics drivers, version 10.2:

* Better game performance, sooner: Game profiles help optimize performance.
AMD is focusing its efforts to provide access to game profiles when a new game launches ? often on the day of launch - and AMD plans to post a separate executable file on AMD.com that users can install to get access to the latest application profiles for improved performance.

* More powerful panoramic gaming with ATI CrossFireX technology: Fans of ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology can now take advantage of the additional graphics horsepower to help increase game performance or image quality settings when using ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology.

The key feature of the new release is the completely new CrossFireX profile system. Although AMD releases ATI Catalyst Software Suite updates on a monthly basis, it still isn?t frequent enough to catch up to game releases. As a result, CrossFireX profiles lag behind game releases. To help gamers solve this issue, AMD plans to release the CrossFireX profiles seperately from the driver itself. As a result, gamers will be able to receive only CrossFireX profile updates more frequently than the monthly driver updates. Catalyst 10.2 removes the CrossFireX profiles from the driver and moves them into a XML file. Updating this XML file will update the CrossFire X profiles.

Users will be able to Avisit AMD.com and download the latest game profiles in the form of an EXE file. Running this EXE file will update user's game profiles to the latest available from AMD.

In addition in Catalyst 10.2 AMD will employ ATI PowerPlay technology to CrossFireX configurations. This will allow lower power utilization while at idle.

ATI CrossFireX will also offers support for ATI Eyefinity. All CrossFireX configurations will accelerate ATI Eyefinity display groups.

Catalyst 10.2 will also pass audio through the DisplayPort to DisplayPort displays to output audio through the speakers on those displays.

Key features of ATI Catalyst graphics drivers, version 10.3, scheduled for release in March, 2010:

* Monthly updates for the mobile crowd: Starting in March, AMD plans to issue stability, performance and feature enhancements in monthly ATI Catalyst driver updates for Windows 7 and Windows Vista-based notebooks that feature ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2000, HD 3000, HD 4000 and HD 5000 series premium graphics processors.

* ATI Eyefinity technology, made better: To further enhance the visual experience of ATI Eyefinity technology, users will have access to an easy-to-use wizard that will allow them to adjust their display layout to compensate for monitor bezels. In addition, users will be able to adjust the brightness, color and contrast for each individual monitor for greater customization and calibration of each screen in their ATI Eyefinity set-up.

* Enabling the 3D ecosystem: AMD is enabling third-party middleware vendors to bring more 3D stereoscopic gaming options to consumers by allowing for independent left and right images at 120 Hz.

AMD Launches ATI Radeon HD 5570

AMD has added a third sub-$100 graphics card to it's DirectX 11 lineup. The new Radeon HD 5570 fits squarely between the recently released Radeon HD 5670 and the Radeon HD 5450 with a $79-85 suggested price range.

The ATI Radeon HD 5570 graphics card is an energy efficient, low-profile DirectX 11 card for small form factor PCs. It fully supports ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology and ATI Stream capabilities.

"Customers purchasing small form factor PCs are looking for improved performance while gaming, watching HD video or working with the latest productivity applications. The ATI Radeon HD 5570 graphics card delivers all of this at a price that won't break the bank," said Matt Skynner, vice president and general manager, AMD Graphics Division.

The ATI Radeon HD 5570 also delivers full 1080p HD playback and supports ATI Stream technology, helping to boost performance for video playback and productivity applications, all while enabling a full Microsoft Windows 7 experience.

The ATI Radeon HD 5570 graphics card provides great game play in DirectX 11 titles such as Codemaster's Colin McRae: DiRT 2, EA Phenomic's BattleForge, GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 as well as DirectX 9, DirectX 10, DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL titles. The new card delivers up to a 60 percent performance improvement over the closest competing product in its class (Nvidia GeForce GT 220), AMD claims.

AMD based the Radeon HD 5570 on the same 40-nm Redwood graphics processor that powers the 5670. Users will get 400 stream processors, five texture units (for 20 texels/clock fill rate), two ROP units (for a total eight pixels per clock), and a 128-bit memory interface. However, the core clock speed has fallen from 775MHz to 650MHz, and instead of 4Gbps GDDR5, AMD has limited the 5570's memory selection to 1.8Gbps DDR3.

As a result, floating-point number crunching power has fallen from 620 gigaFLOPS on the Radeon HD 5670 to 520 gigaFLOPS on the Radeon HD 5570, and memory bandwidth has dropped similarly from 64GB/s to just 28.8GB/s.

Trojans Have Been Identified in Two Firefox Add-ons

Two experimental add-ons, Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader and all versions of Master Filer were found to contain Trojan code aimed at Windows users, Mozilla announced today.

Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader contained Win32.LdPinch.gen, and Master Filer contained Win32.Bifrose.32.Bifrose Trojan. Both add-ons have been disabled on AMO.

If a user installs one of these infected add-ons, the trojan would be executed when Firefox starts and the host computer would be infected by the trojan. Uninstalling these add-ons does not remove the trojan from a user?s system. Users with either of these add-ons should uninstall them immediately, Mozilla says. Since uninstalling these extensions does not remove the trojan from a user's system, an antivirus program should be used to scan and remove any infections.

This vulnerability is known to affect Firefox on Windows only, if either Master Filer or Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader are installed. Versions of Sothink Web Video Downloader greater than 4.0 are not infected. Master Filer was downloaded approximately 600 times between September 2009 and January 2010, according to Mozilla. Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader was downloaded approximately 4,000 times between February 2008 and May 2008. Master Filer was removed from AMO on January 25, 2010 and Version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader was removed from AMO on February 2, 2010.

AMO performs a malware check on all add-ons uploaded to the Mozilla's Add-on site, and blocks add-ons that are detected as such. This scanning tool failed to detect the Trojan in Master Filer.

Sony Develops Wireless Intra-Connection Technology for Internal High Speed Data Transfer

Sony today announced the development of millimeter-wave wireless intra-connection technology that realizes 11Gbps wireless data transfer inside electronic products such as television sets.

By replacing complicated wires and internal circuitry with wireless connections, this technology enables a reduction in the size and cost of the IC and other components used in electronics products, delivering advantages such as size and cost-reduction and reliability of the final product.

Once wired connections approach the limit of their data capacity, additional circuitry is required to facilitate larger data transfers, however this leads to the issue of increasingly complicated IC packages, intricately printed circuit boards, and larger IC sizes.

Sony's new wireless intra-connection system is based on millimeter-wave wireless data transfer technology. Millimeter-wave refers to electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 30GHz to 300GHz, and wavelength between 1mm to 10mm. With their high frequency, millimeter-waves are suited to ultra high speed data transfer, while a further advantage is their ability to transfer data using only very small antennas. Sony has integrated highly energy efficient millimeter-wave circuits on 40nm-CMOS-LSIs (with an active footprint of just 0.13mm2 including both the transmitter and receiver), to realize high speed, 11Gbps data transfer over a distance of 14mm using antennas approximately 1mm in size.

By replacing physical circuitry in electronics products with high speed wireless connections, this new data transfer technology reduces the number of wired connections and minimizes IC use, to simplify the IC package and printed circuit board. Furthermore, because the data transfer occurs without contact, this enhances the reliability of movable and detachable parts within the product.

Sony's technology will be presented at "ISSCC 2010", to be held in San Francisco, California, US, from February 7th 2010.

Key Features

1. Optimized circuit for intra-connection on CMOS-LSIs
Sony has drawn on its years of experience in radio frequency technologies to realize compact, low power, millimeter-wave circuits optimal for use in intra-connection over CMOS-LSIs. Due to the small footprint of just 0.13mm2 the circuits can be built into a single chip, at very low cost.

2. Injection lock method realizes small size, low power consumption and sufficient transmission range for intra-connection.
Synchronized detection, which aligns the receiver with the transmitted carrier frequency, is an effective means of providing sufficient transmission range for intra-connection, while also ensuring low power consumption. However, the PLL (Phase Locked Loop) generally used for this synchronization has the disadvantage of requiring large, power-consuming circuitry to transmit at millimeter-wave frequency. By adopting an injection lock system that eliminates PLL, Sony has enabled synchronized detection over small size circuits, while also minimizing power consumption and providing sufficient transmission range for successful intra-connection.

This technology, used together with miniature antennas approximately 1mm in length, enable transmission speeds of 11Gbps over a distance of 14mm, with power consumption of 70mW. It is possible for this distance to be extended to around 50mm using high directivity antennas.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 Gains Popularity Over Firefox Browser.

A report shows that Internet Explorer 8 is the most popular browser on Windows with 27.9% usage share and that it now has 25.6% of market share across all OS's on a worldwide-weighted usage share basis.

The report was released this week by net Applications
and refers to the browser market share for January.

Microsoft's latest version of Internet Explorer (IE) remains in first place but Google's Chrome has been steadily gaining ground on the Web browsing software, according to the report.

Chrome's share of the browser market rose from 1.62 percent in March of last year to 5.22 percent last month.

During the same period, Internet Explorer's piece of the Web browser market dropped from 68.46 percent to 62.12 percent, Net Application reported.

The percentage of people using Safari browser software for Apple's Macintosh computers went from 3.63 percent in March of last year to 4.53 percent in January.

Microsoft claims that the success of its IE browser relies on the fact that IE8 offers users protection and privacy online. As of today, Internet Explorer 8 has done over 350 million malware blocks, according to Microsoft. In addition, Internet Explorer 7 and 8 have blocked a total of over 125 million phishing sites.

Recently, organizations including Google have been recommending that people update their browsers and move off older versions, such as the nearly decade-old Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft said that it supported this recommendation to move off Internet Explorer 6.

The new technology ensures gamers more complex key combinations which will be recognized by the computer to keep the game in action. The new keyboard also offers other gaming features such as macro recording, mode and profile switching, and adjustable backlighting.

The Applied Sciences Group, an interdisciplinary research and development team that works across the Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division doing applied research for Microsoft Hardware, Microsoft Surface and Xbox 360, developed the anti-ghosting technology with gamers in mind. The technology allows gamers to press up to 26 keys at once. Because each key is scanned independently by the keyboard hardware, each key press is correctly detected regardless of how many other keys are being pressed at the same time.

The SideWinder X4 Keyboard also offers more of the features gamers need to stay at the top of their game. Macro recording lets them string together multiple moves into one press of a button, and the new automatic macro repetition feature lets them repeat the macro over and over as needed with one key. Mode and profile switching also provides easy ways to customize the keyboard for different games and users while adjustable backlighting lets gamers select the lighting level that meets their needs.

The SideWinder X4 Keyboard will be available in March 2010 for the estimated retail price of $59.95 (U.S) and will be available for pre-sale on Amazon.com later this week. The SideWinder X4 Keyboard is backed by a three-year limited hardware warranty.

Panasonic Establishes Blu-ray 3D Authoring Facility

Panasonic set up a fully operational Blu-ray 3D Advanced Authoring Center located at Panasonic's R&D facility, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory.

The Advanced Authoring Center was recently upgraded and equipped with the latest 3D technological innovations, based on standards developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association. The Center now offers studios and filmmakers Blu-ray 3D image processing, interactive programming as well as authoring and disc certification services, which are capable of making Blu-ray 3D Discs commercially available as early as Spring 2010.

Long before the Blu-ray 3D specifications were finalized within the Blu-ray Disc Association, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory collaborated with studios to conduct Blu-ray 3D encoding as well as menu and subtitle authoring trials. This type of early collaboration and research has given the Advanced Authoring Center expertise in guiding and advising companies during the key early planning stages of a Blu-ray 3D title.

"Given Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory's vast experience with HD image processing, we are confident that we lead the industry with MPEG-4 MVC (Multiview Video Coding) 3D image compression technology," said Jeannine Patton, Vice President & General Manager of the Advanced Authoring Center. "This laboratory, located as we are in the world's entertainment capital, is proud to offer the filmmaking community the industry's first complete, end-to-end Blu-ray 3D encoding and authoring facility. Blu-ray 3D is an exciting new space for the home entertainment industry and our early research and collaboration was extremely helpful in determining what will provide the most compelling experience and optimum performance when designing for Blu-ray 3D."

EU Introduces Privacy Measures For Social Networking, Advertising

Viviane Reding Member of the European Commission responsible for Information Society and Media Privacy highlighed the challenges ahead for the European Union related to the privacy rights of users of social networking web sites.

Ms Reding explained that the EU needs to ensure that personal data are protected against any unauthorised use and that users have the right to decide on the way their data are processed.

Facebook, MySpace or Twitter have become extremely popular, particularly among young people. However children are not always able to assess all risks associated with exposing personal data. "This led me to agree with key providers of social networking services on the "Safer Social Networking Principles for the EU". The providers agreed to ensure that profiles of users under the age of 18 should be private by default and not searchable. On 9 February, on the occasion of Safer Internet Day 2010, we will report on how these principles are being implemented in practice, " Ms Reding said.

The EU's Information Society Commissioner also discussed the privacy related to the RFID, the small chips that exchange information over radio waves. These chips may include sensitive personal data.

"I share the strong concerns received from citizens about the possible threat of wider use of RFID to their privacy. Therefore, the Commission took the initiative last year to adopt a Recommendation defining how data protection should be guaranteed for RFID applications. As a result the RFID industry committed itself to deliver a Privacy Impact Assessment on the use of these chips, "the Commissioner added.

Monitoring internet users' web browsing to better target them with advertisements also gives rise to privacy concerns. "Users are not always aware that they are being tracked whenever browsing the Internet. We have launched an infringement procedure in the so-called Phorm case, alerted by worried citizens of the UK. For me it is clear that without the prior informed consent of citizens their data cannot be used, " Ms Reding said.

Better protection of privacy was also one of the priorities of the Telecoms Reform. The amendments the Commission proposed to the ePrivacy Directive provide more transparency and give stronger control to citizens. The European Parliament and the Council supported and adopted these changes. Providers will now have to notify breaches of personal data without delay to both the competent authorities and the individuals concerned.

The European Commission is currently analysing the over 160 responses to the public consultation on the reform of the General Data Protection Directive. "I can tell you that most responses call for stronger and more consistent data protection legislation across the Union. We will carefully assess all responses and prepare a future proposal in line with the Lisbon Treaty and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, " Ms Reding said.

The EU Commissioner also refered to the the right to privacy and protection of personal data when performing simple operations like transferring money, booking a flight ticket or passing a security check at the airport. She talked about the body scanners, which have "a considerable privacy-invasive potential."

"Their usefulness is still to be proven. Their impact on health has not yet been fully assessed. Therefore I cannot imagine this privacy-intrusive technique being imposed on us without full consideration of its impact.

"The same applies to large volumes of our financial data transferred to the U.S. I remain to be convinced that all these SWIFT transfers are necessary, proportionate and effective to fight terrorism. I will be looking into this very closely in the coming weeks."

Samsung Develops 'Green' 30nm DDR3 DRAM

Samsung today announced that its 30-nanometer-class DRAM has successfully completed customer evaluations, in two gigabit (Gb) densities.

With DDR3 SDRAM becoming the predominant main memory this quarter, Samsung's advancement in process technology will raise productivity and expedite dissemination of high performance, 1.5V and 1.35V DDR3 for servers, desktops and notebook PCs.

"Our accelerated development of next generation 30nm-class DRAM should keep us in the most competitive position in the memory market," said Soo-In Cho, president, Memory Division, Samsung Electronics.

He added, "Our 30nm-class process technology will provide the most advanced low-power DDR3 available today and therein the most efficient DRAM solutions anywhere for the introduction of consumer electronics devices and server systems."

The 30nm-class process when applied to DDR3 mass production raises productivity by 60 percent over 40nm-class DDR3. This will result in a doubling of production cost-efficiency compared to DRAM produced using 50nm to 60nm-class technology.

The 30nm-class 2Gb, Green DRAM reduces power consumption by up to 30 percentover 50nm-class DRAM. A 4-Gigabyte (GB), 30nm module when used in a new-generation notebook will consume only three watts per hour, which is just three percent of the total power usage of a notebook.

The new DDR3 will be used in a broader range of products, from servers to notebooks, desktops, and future versions of netbooks and mobile devices.

The 30nm-class DDR3 is scheduled for mass production in the second half of this year.
