Toshiba Introduces 2.5-inch 750GB Hard Disk Drives

Toshiba today announced two additions to it's 5,400 RPM line of 2.5-inch HDDs featuring industry-leading storage capacities.

In the standard 9.5 millimeter-high, two-platter design, the MK7559GSXP HDD incorporates both the industry's highest areal density and capacity at 750GB. Sample shipments will start from April, 2010, Toshiba said.

The MK7559GSXP HDD features an areal density of 839.1M bit/mm2, making it ideal for mobile applications in which capacity is key, including notebook computers and external HDDs.

Toshiba also introduced a new three-platter 12.5-millimeter-high platform with the MK1059GSM and a capacity of 1TB of storage. This capacity point was predominantly supported by larger form factor 3.5-inch HDDs until the introduction of high-end 2.5-inch solutions.

To deliver these storage capabilities, Toshiba has implemented Advanced Sector Format Technology, which uses 4K byte-per-sector formatting and improved error correcting code functions to provide maximum error detection and more efficient use of the storage surface area.

The MK7559GSXP energy consumption efficiency is about 14% less than the previous generation (MK6465GSX, 640GB).

The new products offerings represent the company's first mobile HDD platforms developed with the combined engineering resources from the integration of Fujitsu's HDD business, which Toshiba acquired last fall.

Opera Doubles Download Numbers in Europe After Choice Screen Introduction

Following the introduction of the Choice Screen in European versions of Microsoft's operating systems, Opera Software said that it was experiencing a dramatic uptake on downloads of its latest browser, Opera 10.50.

After the Choice Screen launch in early March, on average, more than half of the European downloads of Opera's latest browser come directly from the Choice Screen, the company said.

"This confirms that when users are given a real choice on how they choose the most important piece of software on their computer, the browser, they will try out alternatives," said H'kon Wium Lie, CTO of Opera Software. "A multitude of browsers will make the Web more standardized and easier to browse."

The increase represents more than a doubling from the normal download numbers, even only after a short period with the Choice Screen. According to plan, the rollout of the Choice Screen will continue well into May for existing Windows computers and for five more years on new installations.

The following numbers are the percentages of country downloads of Opera's latest desktop browser that originate from the Choice Screen, as part of the total Opera 10.50 numbers for desktop.

New Nvidia Driver Fixes Fan Speed Issues

Nvidia has posted a new set of drivers (Ver 197.13), which fixes fan speed issues reported by users after installing the company's previous driver official release (Ver 196.75) from NVIDIA's website.

NVIDIA said that some users had reported fan speed issues after installing 196.75 drivers from NVIDIA's website. NVIDIA has removed these drivers and asked it's partners to also remove the drivers. Nvidia asks any users still using 196.75 drivers to immediately discontinue use and either roll back to their previous driver or install the new 197.13 drivers. Driver roll back help can be found here.

"NVIDIA apologizes to our customers that installed the 196.75 driver and experienced quality issues. For the small number of customers that did experience problems, in almost every case reverting back to our 196.21 driver immediately resolved their issues. We continue to work closely with our add-in-card partners and PC manufacturers to help resolve any additional customer issues not solved by reverting to the earlier driver," Nvidia said.

New Chrome Release Features Automatic Translation

The latest stable release of Google's Chrome web browser offers translation capabilities.

When the language of the webpage you are viewing is different from your preferred language setting, Chrome will display an infobar asking if you'd like the page to be translated for you, using Google Translate. With a click, the entire text on the page will be translated into your language of preference, without the need for browser extensions or plugins. If you don't want Chrome to offer to translate a particular language or web page, you can control these settings by clicking on the "Options" button in the infobar.

Google said that language detection takes place locally on your computer, so no information is sent to Google Translate until you choose to translate a page. Language detection in Chrome is based on the compact language detection library (CLD), which Google has made available as open source code.

For most languages, the CLD determines the language of a page by breaking down its text in quadgrams, or sequences of up to four characters. The CLD then looks up each quadgram in a large hashtable that contains language probabilities, which is included in the Chrome binaries. This hashtable was originally built by processing language probabilities over billions of web pages that are indexed by Google's search engine. In just a few milliseconds, the CLD can determine the language of most web pages. Chrome shows an infobar offering to translate the page only when the CLD has detected the language of a web page above a certain degree of confidence. If you click the "Translate" button in the infobar, the text contained in the page is then sent to Google Translate's servers (over a secure connection if the page was served over HTTPS). Thanks to the work of the Google Translate team, Google Translate's servers return this translated text quickly so that Chrome can replace the text in the page with the translated version. The request to Google Translate's servers does not include any cookies, Google added.

Google also plans to make language detection even more precise by providing larger CLD tables without increasing the size of the browser's installation package.

You can try translation in the browser for yourself by downloading Google Chrome at google.com/chrome.

For additional details about the new Crucial DDR3L memory solutions, or how to participate in the Crucial Reliance Program, visit www.crucial.com/server.

Vulnerability Found in Microsoft's Virtual PC

Core Security Technologies this morning issued a security advisory for Microsoft's Virtual PC (VPC) software.

The advisory calls out a proof of concept where the virtual machine monitor allows memory pages above the 2GB level to be read from or written to by user-space programs running within a guest operating system. The advisory explicitly calls into question the effectiveness of many of the security hardening features of Windows, including DEP, SafeSEH, and ASLR.

Microsoft says that this advisory does not affect the security of Windows 7 systems directly. The security safeguards (DEP, ASLR, SafeSEH, etc.) that are in place remain effective at helping protect users from malware on that system. In addition, Microsoft's Windows Server virtualization technology, Hyper-V, is also not affected by this advisory. Applications running inside a Hyper-V guest continue to benefit from these same security safeguards.

"The functionality that Core calls out is not an actual vulnerability per se. Instead, they are describing a way for an attacker to more easily exploit security vulnerabilities that must already be present on the system. The protection mechanisms that are present in the Windows kernel are rendered less effective inside of a virtual machine as opposed to a physical machine. There is no vulnerability introduced, just a loss of certain security protection mechanisms," Microsoft said.

"The functionality described only affects the guest operating system that is running within a Virtual PC environment. In practice, the guest operating system in a Virtual PC environment is typically Windows XP as part of Windows XP Mode. Of the safeguards Core calls out, it should be noted that only DEP is available in Windows XP SP3; Windows XP doesn't contain ASLR. The net result' An attacker can only exploit a vulnerable application running "inside" the guest virtual machine on Windows XP, rather than Windows 7," Microsoft added.

Intel Launches 6-core Processor For Data Centers

Intel today launched the Intel Xeon Processor 5600 series. The new processors deliver two new security features - Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (Intel AES-NI), and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) - that enable faster encryption and decryption performance.

These are also the first server and workstation chips based on the new Intel 32nm logic technology, which uses Intel's second-generation high-k metal gate transistors to increase speed and decrease energy consumption. The Intel Xeon Processor 5600 series supports up to six cores per processor and delivers up to 60 percent greater performance than the 45nm Intel Xeon processor 5500 series. In addition, data centers can replace 15 single-core servers with a single new one, and achieve a return on their investment in as little as 5 months, Intel claims.

Data centers will also benefit from the power efficiency of the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series. A two-socket server using the new low-voltage Intel Xeon processor L5640 can deliver the same performance as a server using the previous generation's champion; the Intel Xeon processors X5570 series, but with up to 30 percent lower platform power.

The Intel Xeon processor 5600 series includes Intel AES-NI, a new set of instructions first introduced with the new 2010 Intel Core processor family. Biking Directions Now Available With Google Maps.

Google today announced that it has added biking directions in the U.S. to Google Maps.

Google unveiled the new feature at the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC.

This new feature includes: step-by-step bicycling directions; bike trails outlined directly on the map; and a new "Bicycling" layer that indicates bike trails, bike lanes, and bike-friendly roads.

The directions feature provides step-by-step, bike-specific routing suggestions' similar to the directions provided by Google's driving, walking, or public transit modes. Simply enter a start point and destination and select "Bicycling" from the drop-down menu. You will receive a route that is optimized for cycling, taking advantage of bike trails, bike lanes, and bike-friendly streets and avoiding hilly terrain whenever possible. You can click-and-drag your route to customize it as you'd like. You can also access the other features in Google Maps, such as Street View, so you can tell exactly where you might need to turn on your route or preview how wide a bike lane is, and Local Search, so you know where you can take a water break or where the bike shops are along your route. Biking directions provides time estimates for routes based on an algorithm that takes into account the length of the route, the number of hills, fatigue over time, and other variables.

The new bicycling layer for Google Maps, accessible via the "More'" drop down menu at the top of the map, will display an overlay of the various bike-friendly roads and trails around town. The layer is color-coded to show three different types of paths:

* Dark green indicates a dedicated bike-only trail;
* Light green indicates a dedicated bike lane along a road;
* Dotted green indicates roads without bike lanes but are more appropriate for biking, based on factors such as terrain, traffic, and intersections.

Thousands of miles of trails in the US have also been added directly onto the map.

Google has partnered with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit that creates networks of trails from former rail lines, to provide information on bike trails in more than 150 cities.

Visit http://maps.google.com biking to try out this new feature. Biking directions for Google Maps is currently in Beta. Biking directions is currently available on desktop versions of Google Maps for the United States, but a mobile version is planned.

Pioneer Unveils DJM-2000 Mixer in Europe

Pioneer today announced its latest DJying mixer, the DJM-2000.

The DJM-2000 features a screen and an arsenal of remixing FX. Six individual effects processors lay the foundation for hundreds of music manipulation combinations, so a DJ can always create their own unique sound.

The new mixer has been developed with the help of a number of international DJs. James Zabiela, Roger Sanchez, Eddie Halliwell, Tom Middleton, the Swedish House Mafia, Paul Woolford, John ?00? Fleming and Radio 1's hard dance darling Kutski have all tested out the DJM-2000 at various stages of development.

The DJM-2000 has effectively built in the technology of the Pioneer EFX-1000, removing the need for an external effects unit along with touch screen technology from the company's SVM-1000.

The ProDJ Link function makes it easy to switch over from one DJ to the next. By connecting up to 4 CDJ-2000s / CDJ-900s via LAN cable into the mixer and two laptops running rekordbox via USB In, the DJs can share music libraries across all decks.

While inheriting the basic layout of their club standard DJM series, Pioneer's design team has come up with a larger interface positioned in the middle of the mixer. The 5.8" LCD multi-touch panel allows the DJ to use touch panel effects whilst checking them visually. It also comes with beat effect and INST FX functions, which means the DJ can alter the sound spontaneously without having to connect to multiple devices.

Another highlight of the INST effects is that they are available individually on each of the four channels. They offer more accurate control of filters, and the Hi Mid and Low EQ on each channel can be switched to make them Isolators.

The CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900's HID control of DJ software allows virtual decks to be manipulated without time-code vinyl, and now the DJM-2000 further simplifies connectivity directly to your Mac or PC by having a soundcard built in.
