ASUS Unveils New 890FX Based Motherboards

ASUS provides optimized solutions to utilize incoming technology from AMD, supporting the chip maker's new six-core CPU design.

Exclusive features added to ASUS 890FX motherboards realize the hexa-core architecture's capabilities.

Both ROG Crosshair IV Formula and M4A89TD PRO include the AMD 890FX chipset and deliver high PC performance through ASUS Core Unlocker and Turbo Unlocker, empowering users with on-demand overclocking and performance boosts for greater CPU capabilities in real time.

ASUS' Core Unlocker technology on new 890FX boards makes it possible to turn a budget quad-core version of a CPU into a full six-cores for significant computing gains. It is accompanied by Turbo Unlocker, an intelligent overclocking engine that opens up CPU performance instantly by CPU core ratio when engaged in heavy computing or intensive tasks, including gaming.

Designed for AMD Black Edition and 6-core processors equipped with an unlockable multiplier, Turbo Unlocker intelligently adjusts CPU clock speeds with one-click input from users to attain even more computing power. When running single-core optimized applications, Turbo Unlocker adjusts resources and ensures maximum performance on dedicated cores. For multi-threaded applications, all cores supercharge to the highest performance available. Performance gains occur dynamically and instantly based on actual system conditions, so overclocking is always safe and stable.

Using a switch on both new motherboards, Core Unlocker is an ASUS exclusive that leads to fast and easy performance gains through the activation of latent CPU cores. One press sets Core Unlocker going as it scans the CPU for additional cores and puts them to work for major computational gains. Heavy multitasking, rendering and gaming go faster and better with additional cores available, as Core Unlocker can turn a dual-core CPU into a tri or quad, or turn quad-core versions into a full six-cores for significant computing gains.

Both ROG Crosshair IV Formula and the M4A89TD PRO also boast native next-generation data USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s. The motherboards feature two USB 3.0 ports each, transferring data at up to ten times the speed of USB 2.0, so moving an entire Blu-ray disc (25GB) takes just 70 seconds. SATA 6Gb/s offers twice the throughput of its predecessor, making hard drives noticeably more expedient.

AMD Delivers New AMD Phenom II X6 Processor

AMD announced the immediate availability of the AMD Phenom II X6 processor and AMD 890FX chipset ushering in a new era of 3D entertainment and visualization.

Users now can upgrade to six-core performance and ATI Radeon HD 5000 series graphics. Today also marks the availability of the flagship AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition processor, AMD's fastest and most tunable desktop processor ever.

AMD Phenom II X6 processors feature new Turbo CORE technology that transfers performance to three dedicated cores operating at higher frequency. AMD Phenom II X6 processors can shift to Turbo mode for demanding games and productivity software which may employ two or three cores, or shift back to six real cores for the demands of core-hungry content creation and 3D applications.

Systems based on the AMD Phenom II X6 processor and the AMD 8-series chipsets are immediately available in North America from BOXX, iBuyPower, CyberPower, Systemax, MainGear, NCS Technology, Velocity Micro, and ZT Systems. AMD Phenom II X6 processors and AMD 8-series chipsets are available on motherboard sold by online retailers NCIX, Newegg, TigerDirect, and ZipZoomFly.

The AMD Phenom II X6 processor works with existing AM3 and AM2+ socket motherboards with proper BIOS support. With the new AMD OverDrive 3.2.1, computer enthusiasts can tune system performance, customize settings, and tune memory performance for the latest AMD platforms with the new AMD Phenom II X6 processor.

The AMD 890FX chipset is the premier complement to the AMD Phenom II X6 processor, featuring ATI CrossFireX technology, and is ready for up to four ATI Radeon HD graphics cards and ATI EyeFinity multiple-display technology.

AMD claims that all of the necessary components to build a complete AMD-based system featuring the AMD Phenom II X6 processor can be purchased for less than the price of Intel's only six-core desktop processor.

The AMD 890FX with SB850 chipset includes the latest SATA 6Gb/s hard drive interface, Gigabit Ethernet, HyperTransport 3.0 technology, and PCI Express Generation 2.0.

Many AMD 890FX-based motherboards also feature SuperSpeed USB 3.0.

x264 Software Offers Free Blu-ray Encoding

The developers of the x264 software today took the first step towards a free software Blu-ray creation toolkit.

The latest version of the x264 software can now produce Blu-ray-compliant video.

With x264's compression, it's possible to author Blu-ray disks on DVD9's (dual-layer DVDs) or even DVD5s (single-layer DVDs) with a reasonable level of quality, the x264 team said.

A demo Blu-ray encoded with x264 containing entirely free content is available for download here. The 2GB disc image, which contains the Open Movie Project's Creative Commons licensed Big Buck Bunny and Elephant's Dream films. The disc is burnable onto an ordinary DVD and playable as Blu-ray disc in most Blu-ray players. It also includes documentary footage with live action content provided by Microsoft.

In accordance with the Blu-ray specifications, the disc image file uses the UDF 2.5 filesystem, which may be incompatible with some older virtual drive and DVD burning applications.

The software supprts BD audio; AC3 audio (aka Dolby Digital), the format used in DVD, is still supported by Blu-ray, and there are many free software AC3 encoders. The primary missing application is a free software Blu-ray authoring tool, to combine the video and audio streams to create a Blu-ray file structure with the menus, chapters, and so forth.

In the meantime, x264 can be used to create streams to be authored using Blu-Print, Scenarist, Encore or other commercial authoring tools.

More detailed documentation on the new Blu-ray support and how to use it can be found in the official commit message. Do keep in mind that you have to export to raw H.264 (not MKV or MP4) or else the buffering information will be slightly incorrect.

In addition, x264 now has native variable-framerate ratecontrol, which makes sure your encodes get a correct target bitrate and proper limiting of maximum bitrate even if the duration of every frame is different and the "framerate" is completely unknown. This helps a lot when encoding from variable-framerate container formats such as FLV and WMV, along with variable-framerate content such as anime.

The software also now supports pulldown (telecine) in much the same fashion as it is handled in MPEG-2. The calling application can pass in flags representing how to display a frame, allowing easy transcoding from MPEG-2 sources with pulldown, such as broadcast television. The x264 commandline app contains some examples of these (such as the common 3:2 pulldown pattern).

x264 also exports HRD timing information, which is critical for compliant transport stream muxing. There is currently an active project to write a fully DVB-compatible free software TS muxer that will be able to interface with x264 for a seamless free software broadcast system. It will likely also be possible to repurpose this muxer as part of a free software Blu-ray authoring package.

Norton's Internet & AntiVirus Security 2011 Public Betas Now Available For Download

Norton from Symantec unveiled the 2011 beta versions of the Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, which are now available for free to download from the Norton beta website.

Additionally, the company launched its first beta security application for Facebook and two standalone security tools to address the increasingly common menace posed by fake antivirus programs and other infections.

The company said that the 2011 Norton beta's were being developed to improve or maintain key performance benchmarks in installation times, scan times, and memory usage. In addition, the products will include System Insight 2.0 which goes beyond security and alerts users when applications are significantly impacting their system resources.

At the heart of this Norton release is the reputation-based security technology. This technology, only available in Norton security products, has been proven to attain unmatched detection of new malware far beyond what is possible with traditional security technologies. New to 2011, Download Insight 2.0 increases the breadth of the product's reputation protection by applying it to virtually every download regardless of the client (browser, email, IM). Additionally, Norton 2011 uses the reputation information to report on the "trustworthiness" of files on a system and help users understand if their download behavior is more or less risky versus the 53 million Norton Community Watch members today.

In addition to the Norton 2011 beta offerings, Symantec announced several new free tools in the fight against cybercrime:

* Norton Safe Web for Facebook - This free beta application protects computer users by scanning their Facebook news feeds for malicious URLs, allowing them to identify risky sites before clicking through. Facebook members can find the free Norton Safe Web application here.

* Norton Power Eraser - Some threats impersonate legitimate programs, modify browsers or boot screen graphics, and even redirect traffic. Due to their deceptive appearance, users will often times allow the installation of programs that may appear legitimate, but are actually harmful. Sometimes, these "scareware" programs can require special tactics to remove them. With Norton Power Eraser, these threats (and others) are specifically targeted, detected and removed. Learn about it and download it here.

* Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (only available to Norton subscribers)' This tool allows Norton users to boot a PC into a safe state when a system is so deeply infected that it will not properly start up. New this year, the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool wizard automatically creates a CD/DVD/USB bootable device in an easy way. Learn about it and download it here.

The Norton Internet Security 2011 beta includes critical features such as Norton Identity Safe which has a new look for 2011, and Norton Safe Web, a Web site
rating service that annotates Google, Yahoo! and Bing.com search results with safety and ecommerce ratings. The Norton Internet Security 2011 beta toolbar rolls all browser protection technologies into a single interface that not only indicates Safe Web ratings, it prevents users from visiting sites which contain malware, browser or media plug-in exploits, phishing attempts, or which have been determined heuristically unsafe.

The beta is available for free public download now at: www.norton.com/nis2011beta or www.norton.com/nav2011beta.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Available

Kicking off a global launch consisting of more than 150 developer-focused events, Microsoft announced the general availability of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.

The company also announced that Silverlight 4 will release to Web (RTW) later in the week.

Developers will be able to download Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 in conjunction with the Microsoft Visual Studio Conference
& Expo launch event in Las Vegas.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 have something for every developer. The new editor, now using Windows Presentation Foundation, delivers a more flexible, feature-rich environment that supports concepts such as the use of multiple monitors. This enables a developer to have one monitor with code, another with the user interface
designer, and yet another with database structure.

For the first time, developers have integrated access to SharePoint functionality into the Visual Studio integrated development environment. Windows Azure tools make it easy to quickly develop, debug, test and deploy cloud applications from within the familiar Visual Studio environment. Built-in support for ASP.NET Model-View-Controller gives developers the flexibility to separately update the appearance and core business logic of Web applications. Windows Phone 7 developers will be able to build mobile applications using Visual Studio with integrated phone design surfaces. Silverlight 4 creates a whole new way to deliver applications that run inside and outside the browser.

For developers who are developing applications for Windows 7, Visual Studio 2010 has built-in support for Windows 7's multitouch features (Windows Touch) and the "Ribbon" UI. That means developers can easily build applications specifically for Windows 7 that use multitouch and use the Ribbon.

To address the growing complexity of software development, Visual Studio 2010 provides powerful tools for the entire team. Microsoft claims that intelliTrace, a "time machine" for developers and testers, makes nonreproducible bugs virtually a thing of the past by recording the application's execution history and providing reproduction of the reported bug, enabling the tester to help squash the bug once and for all. This is just one of the many new features that have been added to help with Application Lifecycle Management, representing.

.NET Framework 4 adds additional support for industry standards, more language choice, new support for high-performance middle-tier applications including parallel programming, and side-by-side installation with .NET Framework 3.5. With the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, the size of the runtime has been decreased by over 80 percent, making it easier for developers to get applications, and therefore users, up and running faster.

Silverlight 4, which will RTW later this week, offers new features including extended out-of-browser capabilities, enhancements for enterprise application developers, and more than 60 customizable pre-written controls to quickly build interactive applications.

Music Industry Welcomes New UK Anti-piracy Law

The international music industry today called for governments to take decisive legislative action to curb digital piracy following the passing of the Digital Economy Act in the UK.

The Digital Economy Act introduces a graduated response system, by which ISPs will write education and warning letters to copyright infringers, with the prospect of technical measures, such as temporary account suspension, being used as a sanction in response to subsequent repeat infringement.

IFPI, representing around 1400 major and independent record companies worldwide, said the newly-adopted UK legislation, requiring measures from ISPs to curb piracy on their networks, sets a powerful example to other countries.

IFPI chairman John Kennedy said: "The passing of the Digital Economy Act in the UK recognises that if a country is to have world-class creative industries, then it also needs laws that will effectively protect their rights from the crippling problem of digital piracy.

"The new UK legislation is a decisive step towards dealing with P2P and other forms of illegal distribution in a way that can substantially reduce the problem. Most importantly, it recognises that internet service providers have an essential role to play in curbing online piracy and reducing infringements on their networks.

"The move by the UK creates momentum for the graduated response approach to tackling piracy internationally. Governments increasingly understand that, in the digital economy, creative industries like music, film, books and games can drive growth and jobs for many years to come if they are provided with the right legal environment and with a modern system of enforcement in which ISPs actively cooperate.

"The UK has today joined the ranks of those countries who have taken decisive and well-considered steps to address the issue. We hope this will prompt more focus and urgency for similar measures in other countries where debate is underway."

Several Governments, including the UK, have proposed or adopted legislation introducing a graduated response system for ISPs. In France, the "Hadopi" law including temporary account suspension for repeat infringers is expected to come into force later this year. Measures have also been introduced in Korea and Taiwan and have been proposed by the Government in New Zealand.

However, internet users should not expect any specific measures anytime soon. The British government introduced the measures because in the 20 months since the MoU between ISPs and copyright businesses, little progress has been made. So the P2P part of the Bill is actually a long set of instructions for Ofcom - the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries - inviting it to draw up a code of obligations for both ISPs and copyright holders. The code of practice will guide how both parties deal with infringement, mainly from P2P use.

Ofcom's code for handling copyright infringement should also be cleared by he EU.

Ofcom's technical measures to be introduced by the service provider may be limits in the downloading speeds to a subscriber, prevention from using the service to gain access to particular material or service suspension. Of course, these technical obligations are then presented to the U.K. Parliament for inspection and approval.

As a result, UK internet users should not expect to see much at least before 2012.

Sony Outlines 3D Coverage Plan of the FIFA World Cup

Following the initial joint announcement to make the world's first FIFA World Cup available in 3D, FIFA and Sony today unveiled insights into what the football fans around the globe can expect from this undertaking.

With a total of seven pairs of Sony's professional HDC cameras on rigs at every match (model: HDC-1500), the action on the pitch will be captured in a 3D quality enabled through its proprietary multi-image processor (model: MPE-200) and 3D Outside Broadcast truck. Sony's processor, the only one in the market to date, makes an end-to-end workflow possible in the production process and automatically adjusts the depth-of-field to ensure an optimal 3D viewing experience around the world.

Starting from the FIFA Confederations Cup last year in South Africa, Sony has been working on enhancing the 3D capturing of fast-moving football action and has since conducted a number of 3D filming trials in Europe.

3D filming will be realised at five out of the 10 FIFA World Cup stadiums: Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
25 matches in total will be filmed and broadcast in 3D, which will include a carefully chosen selection of those games expected to attract most public attention, including the opening game on June 11 at Soccer City (South Africa vs Mexico) and the crowning final game on July 11 also in Johannesburg. Other games to be captured in 3D are:

"The 3D feed from these 25 matches will be made available for broadcast on 3D channels, which can be enjoyed by consumers on their 3D-compatible TV sets in the comfort of their home, almost as if they were in the football stadium themselves," said Niclas Ericson, Director of FIFA TV. "Whilst discussions with major broadcasters are ongoing, I am very pleased to announce the first confirmed partners for the 3D live broadcast, who are ESPN in the US and Sogecable in Spain. We expect further announcements to be made shortly," he added.

A dedicated global 3D public viewing project will also debut at this year's FIFA World Cup. Eight matches will be fed live to digital cinemas and selected venues in 3D HD quality around the globe. To this end, FIFA has appointed Swiss-based Aruna Media AG to manage the exclusive 3D cinema and entertainment venue rights for live games in 3D. Aruna plans to broadcast live 3D coverage of matches to around 26 countries and is in advanced discussions with several major markets.

Complementing the 3D live broadcast and public viewing activities, the general public will also be able to exclusively enjoy the 3D promotional trailers shown on Sony 3D BRAVIA TVs in around 4,000 Sony-affiliated retail stores worldwide, including 200 Sony flagship stores (total number of Sony-affiliated retail stores: 1,500 in North America, 1,300 in Europe, 500 in Japan, 200 in Asia, 200 in Latin America, and 30 in South Africa). Furthermore, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment today unveiled plans to produce and distribute the official FIFA film in 3D on Blu-ray Disc this year.
