SD Association Defines New High-Speed Performance Options for SDXC and SDHC Memory Cards and Devices

The SD Association announced today two new high-speed performance symbols for the fastest SDXC and SDHC devices and memory cards.

The first symbol identifies products with bus-interface speeds up to 104 Megabytes per second for greater device performance. The second symbol identifies SD memory cards and products with a performance option allowing real-time video recording.

New SD memory cards and devices bearing the following new performance symbols may now begin entering the marketplace:

- The new Ultra High Speed (UHS) symbol can be found exclusively on SDXC and SDHC products. SDXC or SDHC products with the UHS-I symbol offer the fastest bus-interface speeds available today, capable of supporting data transfer speeds up to 104 Megabytes per second. UHS-I quadruples the existing maximum possible speed of 25 Megabytes per second. UHS bus interfaces are backwards compatible. SDXC UHS-I and SDHC UHS-I memory cards achieve greatest performance when paired with a UHS-I device and allow consumers to record HD resolution videos, plus perform other simultaneous recording functions.

- The new UHS Speed Class symbol can be found exclusively on SDXC UHS-I and SDHC UHS-I products. UHS Speed Class 1 designates SD memory cards and products with a performance option designed to support real-time video recording. This symbol will be found on SDXC UHS-I or SDHC UHS-I memory cards. Consumers can realize the full potential of recording real-time broadcasts and capturing videos using a digital video camera by pairing their devices with UHS Speed Class 1 memory cards.

- The existing Speed Class symbols for non-UHS SD, SDHC and SDXC products are Class, Class 4, Class 6 and Class 10. They refer to the minimum write speed performance of the memory card. The symbols may be found on memory cards and devices, including video and digital cameras.

For greatest performance, users should pair their devices with the corresponding SD memory card.

Lite-On Announces 12X Blu-ray Disc Writer

Lite-On's first 12X Blu-ray Disc (BD) writer, the iHBS212, will be available in the European market at the end of this month.

This BD writer is capable of recording and playing back today's most popular media formats including Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. Besides writing BD-R Single Layer discs at 12X, the iHBS212 writes Double Layer BD-R media at 8X, and reads BD-ROM discs at 8X as well. Single Layer DVD±R discs can be written at 16X, Double Layer DVD±R at 8X and rewritable discs at 8X (+RW) and 6X (-RW) respectively. The drive reads and writes CD-R at 48X and rewrites CD-RW at 24X.

The iHBS112 incorporates Serial ATA interface and it is designed using a short-loader mechanism for better airflow and a lower noise level. With the included LightScribe technology users can apply laser-etched labels directly onto their LightScribe discs. The iHBS212 is equipped with CyberLink BD Suite, including Blu-ray writing and playback applications.

Featured with the drive is Lite-On's patented SmartWrite technology for setting the optimum speed of operation, enabling users to "burn and work" simultaneously. Users can run other applications while making a BD, DVD or CD with a minimum risk of failed burns, or creating "coasters". Also included are SmartX technologies, used to adjust data extraction speed, such as decreasing the reading speed when possible to reduce acoustic noise and anti-vibration, and provide smooth and quiet playback.

The iHBS212 is available as a retail version from end of June 2010, with MSRP €165. A bulk version of this drive (named iHBS112) is already available, with MSRP €149.

Toshiba "dynabook TX/98MBL" Notebook Supports 3D Blu-ray and 3D Games

Toshiba today announced the introduction of the industry's first notebook PC featuring playback of 3D content in the Blu-ray 3D format.

The new "dynabook TX/98MBL" will be available from the end of July in the Japanese market.

"dynabook TX/98MBL" features a 15.6-inch wide LCD display with LED backlighting and a 120Hz scan rate. It employs WinDVD BD for TOSHIBA to play back content in the Blu-ray 3D format and NVIDIA 3D Vision software and hardware to deliver a rich 3D experience.

The new 3D notebook PC adopts the active shutter technology that has made 3D a hit in movie theatres around the world. The system's active shutter LCD glasses lighten and darken at the same fast refresh rate of the 120Hz LCD, with an effective refresh rate for each eye of 60Hz. As each eye receives a slightly different image, the result is a dynamic, high quality stereoscopic image: full 3D. The notebook's graphics are powered by NVIDIA's latest graphic processor, the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M and 1GB Video RAM dedicated to graphics processing.

A pair of wireless 3D active shutter glasses is bundled with the dynabook TX/98MBL.

The dynabook TX/98MBL is also equipped with a combination of harman/kardon stereo speakers and Dolby Advanced Audio. The processor is an Intel Core i7-740QM, and on-board storage is provided by a large capacity 640GB hard disk drive. The latest version of Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 are pre-installed.

The notebook will retail this month in Japan for about 250,000 Yen (US $2740)

SanDisk Doubles Capacity of Its SSD Product Lines

SanDisk today introduced it's latest solid state drive (SSD) product's. The SanDisk SSD G4 serves as a drop-in replacement for hard disk drives (HDD) in notebooks; while the SanDisk SSD P4, the successor to the pSSD modular drive.

SanDisk SSD P4 and SanDisk SSD G4 offer up to 128 gigabytes (GB) and 256GB of storage respectively, double the capacities of the company's previous SSD offerings. The drives are available in various compact form factors, which SanDisk can customize according to manufacturers specification. The SSDs use SanDisk's 32-nanometer (nm) multi-level cell (MLC) process technology.

SanDisk SSD G4 features a sequential read/write speeds of up to 220 and 160MB/sec, a Long-term Data Endurance (LDE) of 160 terabytes written (TBW) for a 256GB drive, sufficient for over 10 years of PC usage. In additon to accelerate performance and extend the drive?s endurance, the SSD G4 uses ExtremeFFS, a page-based algorithm that increases random write speeds and efficiency.

SanDisk SSD P4 is available in capacities ranging from 8GB to 128GB. The drive is available in various form factors that include a new ultra-small variant of the mSATA module, mSATA mini, with dimensions of 26.80 x 30.00 x 3.4 mm.

SanDisk AFM implementation for SanDisk SSD P4 uses nCache acceleration technology, a large non-volatile write cache technology that boosts burst random write performance to shorten boot times, help prevent "stalling" and "hiccups," and increase system responsiveness. The SanDisk SSD P4 offers burst random 4KB performance of up to 600 IOPS.

SanDisk SSD P4 can be used in small devices such as netbooks, smartbooks, tablet computers and ultra-thin notebooks, in addition to POS terminals, Set Top Boxes (STBs), printers and other devices that use embedded flash.

The SanDisk SSD G4 and SanDisk SSD P4 are currently being evaluated by SanDisk's top tier OEMs. High-volume production of the drives is expected in the Q3 2010
