Youtube Increases Upload Limit to 15 Minutes

Youtube announced that it is increasing the time limit of uploaded videos to 15 minutes, from the 10 minutes allowed until now.

Youtube is also encouraging users to take full advantage of this new time limit by making a video of their "15 minutes of fame."

On August 4, youtube will select some of these uploaded videos tagged
as "yt15minutes" and will display them on the YouTube homepage.

Youtube also said that they had spent significant resources on creating and improving their Content ID system and many other powerful tools for copyright owners. Now, all of the major U.S. movie studios, music labels and over 1,000 other global partners of Youtube use Content ID to manage their content on YouTube.

Youtube added that all users who had uploaded a video which was previously rejected for being too long have to go into "My Videos" and delete it before attempting to upload it again.

Google Will Update Image Search Results

Over the next few days Google will be rolling out an update to Google Images.

Google built Google Images in 2001 and today it has an index of over 10 billion images.

Here's what's new in this refreshed design of Google Images:

* Dense tiled layout designed to make it easy to look at lots of images at once.

* Instant scrolling between pages, without letting you get lost in the images.
You can now get up to 1,000 images, all in one scrolling page. Google will show small, unobtrusive page numbers so you don't lose track of where you are.

* Larger thumbnail previews on the results page, designed for modern browsers and high-res screens.

* A hover pane that appears when you mouse over a given thumbnail image, giving you a larger preview, more info about the image and other image-specific features such as "Similar images."

* Once you click on an image, you're taken to a new landing page that displays a large image in context, with the website it's hosted on visible right behind it. Click anywhere outside the image, and you're right in the original page where you can learn more about the source and context.

* Optimized keyboard navigation for faster scrolling through many pages, taking advantage of standard web keyboard shortcuts such as Page Up / Page Down.

Google is also launching a new ad format called Image Search Ads. These ads appear only on Google Images, and they let advertisers include a thumbnail image alongside their lines of text.

Sony Playstation 3 Ready For Blu-ray 3D By Firmware Uprade

Sony has said that the Playstation 3 game console will be able to play Blu-ray 3D titles through the upcoming firmware upgrade which is coming up in September.

Sony has already released a firmware update for the PS3 last month, offering compatibility with 3D games.

The situation for the Blu-ray 3D support is different as the latest version of the HDMI standard 1.4 supports both the 3D transmission and the Blu-ray 3D content (MVC Multiview Coding - variant of MEPG-4 H.264 used for BD 3D). The PS3 is equipped with an HDMI 1.3 output, but the Blu-ray 3D needs HDMI 1.4-compatible hardware. As a result, Sony's engineers should address the issue of how legacy hardware (with HDMI 1.3 ports) will cope with the Full HD from an MVC Blu-ray Disc.

Sony assures users that the firmware upgrade would make every PlayStation 3 HDMI 1.4 compatible, in order to pass the Blu-ray 3D content to a 3D HDTV. Although this one should be further examined in practise, it means that there is no setup at all required. If you have a PlayStation' a simple connection of the PS3's HDMI cable will be enough to make the PS3 automatically recognise that a 3D display is attached. The PS3 will also know the size of the screen as well, which is very important for actually rendering 3D correctly, Sony claims.

Later this year, Sony's PS3 is also expected to get support for 3D photos and reproduction of Youtube 3D content once it is available.

Support Your Heavy Graphics Card With The New PowerColor PowerJack

TUL today announced a professional graphics interface card supporter: the PowerColor PowerJack.

As high-end graphics are becoming more powerful, the sizes are increasing as well as their weight. Owners of high-end graphics cards may be able to attest to the problem of the weight of the card bending in the case. A couple screws and the motherboard may not be enough to hold the heavier cards in place anymore.

So this is where the PowerColor PowerJack comes in. The PowerJack supports the weight of the card from the back where it's most needed. With its multistage extension function, it can extend its height from 61.25 mm up to 150 mm and it's applicable to E-ATX / ATX / M-ATX motherboards and can be used in full tower, mid tower & mini tower chassis.

The PowerJack will be available on July 15.

IBM is Changing to Firefox As Its Default Browser

IBM's employees worldwide will use the the Mozilla Firefox browser on their business desktop and laptop software environments.

The announcement was made by Bob Sutor, Vice President Open Source and Linux, IBM Software Group.

Sutor said that the decision to use the Firefox web browser inside IBM was made after considering the following:

* Firefox is stunningly standards compliant, and interoperability via open standards is key to IBM's strategy.
* Firefox is open source and its development schedule is managed by a development community not beholden to one commercial entity.
* Firefox is secure and an international community of experts continues to develop and maintain it.
* Firefox is extensible and can be customized for particular applications and organizations, like IBM.
* Firefox is innovative and has forced the hand of browsers that came before and after it to add and improve speed and function.

"While other browsers have come and gone, Firefox is now the gold standard for what an open, secure, and standards-compliant browser should be. We'll continue to see this or that browser be faster or introduce new features, but then another will come along and be better still, including Firefox." Sutor wrote on his blog.

"There's another reason we want to get as many of our employees using Firefox as soon as possible, and that is Cloud Computing. For the shift to the cloud to be successful, open standards must be used in the infrastructure, in the applications, and in the way people exchange data," he added.

He also added that it was Firefox and its growth that reinvigorated the browser market as well as the web and praised the browser's support for HTML5.

IBM encourages any employees to start using Firefox as their default browser.
